Profile Information

About Me:
I'm a student at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg. I'm studying to become an engineer.

Back in high school (at Vincent Massey), I was a proud member of several school-based organizations, including my role as editor-in-chief of the yearbook (there are two editor-in-chiefs, a dozen-strong editorial staff, and over 30 designers).

My pride and joy in high school was my role in the SDC (Sustainable Development Committee), which I have worked with to install an Alternative Energy Array on the roof of my school... I could give an explanation of this here, but if you're interested please visit the SDC page, or MasseySDC.org (which I designed).

Oh, and I designed this website too -- I'm pretty good at tech stuff, so many groups have found good uses for me... I am also pretty punctual and reliable.

In October of 2008, I was hired as the new IT Systems Manager of the Manitoba Eco Network.

On October 1st, 2009, I launched the new website of the Manitoba Eco-Network - www.mbeconetwork.org.

I also own and operate EthicalWebDesign.ca.

Hi Mikhail,

I am very excited to be a member of mbecoyouth, I have used the site many times before and thought that I should become a member since I am so frequently on it. I also think that the growing local conference will be amazing. I went last year and it was great, I really enjoyed myself and learned alot. You are correct in assuming that exam season is upon us. I have written two exams so far and am going to write my third on Wednesday. So far I wrote my grade 12 Chemistry, my History and I am going to be writing my Pre-Calculus.

Just yesterday after I wrote my History exam I had a meeting with a company that doesn’t rubber paving. It seems very promising and they great ideas are just what we are looking for. They are located on 1455 Buffalo Place, which is just off McGillivray. This is important because it is so close to the school and we would be promoting local business. If we can find funding from different grants we would like to redo the front of the school using rubber pavement. It is much more environmentally friendly then concrete and is made from recycled rubber tires. If there are any grants that you know of that we could apply for please let me know.

I will make sure to keep you up to date on everything that is happening in SDC.

Sincerely,
Megan

We took the electronics to Urbanmine on Rothwell Road (near Kenaston). They then shipped everything to a recycler in Ontario who disassembled them. Urbanmine then recycled the metals (their main business is as a metal recycler), and the electronic components were dealt with by a firm in the states.

I believe the reason for this somewhat complicated process is that there isn't anywhere in Manitoba with the capacity to do it all from start to finish on-site.

Hey Mikhail,

Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like my blog! Spread it around to people you know, I want this kind of logic to become more widespread.

I have a year left of high school, but I'm way overeager in climate science and often stay up late reading IPCC et al. The other day I read the Paleoclimate chapter, it was fun. I plan on doing a Physical Geo degree at U of M which leads into climatology.

Aww, that is so sweet! Haha, thank you. I'd give you a hug but I think my fat Earth tummy would get in the way. So I'll just include this adorable WWF parody.

I actually fall down a lot. I don't know why I'm so accident prone! I think the first few times were just from me being careless and running without looking. And then every time after that, I'm sure my ankles just give up trying to keep me standing. Maybe there's something wrong with my ankles? I don't know.

My aunt actually thought about sending me to a doctor today but I was too stubborn to go. My philosophy is "if it's not broken, don't fix it." That, and I do honestly believe doctors are not going to take me seriously if something isn't broken anyway. There has been so many times when I've been ignored that I actually find my crazy home remedies and witchcraft is more reliable. Hmm... Maybe I should just join Scientology already? ;)

Thanks again for the flowers. Haha, you have no idea how much that made my night!

This is lovely! I fell and twisted my ankle again today... On the same foot!

It looks like it's going to become a monthly thing now.

You should get access anyway. I can sweet talk my programmer friends into coding everything and we'll be good to go!

Man, it sucks that you'll only be in school part time. I can't imagine how it must be for you. There's so many limitations! I admire how strong you've been, though. Honestly, if it were me, I'd probably be wallowing in self pity and hide in the closet (oh wait, I hide in closets anyway! haha).

I have an idea for the discussion/forum thing.

I think it would be a really great way to bring activity and communication within the site but a problem I find is that it looks way too intimidating at the moment. Right now it seems a little unorganized and aimless. I think people would assume it was just for super important issues to be posted since there's no real guideline of what should/could be posted.

I was thinking if possible, can you provide different categories where people can post about specific topics?

For example, how about have a forums for "General Chat," "Introductions," "Current Issues/News," "Upcoming Events," "Tips for Green Alternatives," etc.

I think you told me you've been on forums before. I'm sure you understand what I'm talking about.

What do you think?
